Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Submits Thailand’s Letter of Intent to Join the OECD

On April 16, 2024, Mr. Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD to submit a letter of intent to join the organization and reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to become a member, which will support Thailand’s economic and social development. The meeting was attended by executives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (Mr. Wanchat Suwankitti, Deputy Secretary-General of NESDC).

Subsequently, the Deputy Prime Minister and his delegation participated in a special consultation with the OECD Council to seek support for Thailand’s membership and to initiate the consideration process promptly.

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister presented Thailand’s strengths and the mutual benefits that both parties would gain from Thailand’s membership, under the concept of a “reliable and impactful Thailand“. Thailand has been the only country in the Indo-Pacific region to participate in the OECD Country Programme, aiming for transparent, competitive, and environmentally friendly development. Thailand is a party to 10 OECD legal instruments and participates in as many as 48 mechanisms, demonstrating Thailand’s commitment and readiness to become a member. OECD membership will be a crucial accelerating factor in helping Thailand attract more foreign investment and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
