On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, H.E. Mr. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD, paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and held discussions regarding Thailand’s OECD membership at Government House. The meeting was attended by Mr. Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council, along with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the OECD delegation.
On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister welcomed and expressed pleasure at the OECD Secretary-General’s visit to Thailand. They had the opportunity to discuss the process and progress of Thailand’s OECD membership, which is a matter of great importance to the government. This is because it will elevate and promote multidimensional structural reforms to be efficient and aligned with OECD standards and international equivalents. It will also establish a sustainable governance system, drive Thailand’s economy to grow steadily, and align with global trends, particularly in the digital economy and green economy.
The OECD Secretary-General praised Thailand’s participation with the OECD and emphasized the mutual benefits gained through various projects, such as Country Programme Phase 1 and Phase 2, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and the Southeast Asia Regional Programme (SEARP). In the membership process, the focus will be on Thailand’s structural reforms through systematic and comprehensive guidance, which will take the form of discussions and collaborative work to adapt OECD experience to Thailand’s context. The OECD is ready to work with the Thai government and agencies to ensure that reforms and transitions in various areas proceed smoothly, efficiently, and in accordance with Thailand’s context.
