Thailand Joins OECD MCM to Drive Reforms and Enhance Multilateral Cooperation

Thailand, represented by Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Ministerial Council Meeting (OECD MCM) for 2026 at the OECD Headquarters in Paris, French Republic, from June 3–4, 2026. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).

The meeting was held under the main theme “Getting Industrial Policies Right for Open Markets, Growth and Prosperity” to exchange perspectives on industrial policy development and the strengthening of market mechanisms that are competitive, open, transparent, and sustainable. These efforts aim to lead to long-term economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens. Discussions covered key issues such as balancing the objectives and impacts of industrial policies, promoting competition and effective regulation, maintaining fiscal discipline, developing digital and emerging technologies, investing in labor skills, linking industrial policies with free and fair trade systems, and promoting investment for sustainable and inclusive growth.

The meeting discussed the importance of designing appropriate industrial policies to enhance productivity, promote innovation, and support the development of various industries, such as artificial intelligence, energy, and critical minerals. This involves balancing security objectives and economic resilience with the maintenance of a fair competition system. Furthermore, such policies should be implemented under the principle of policy coherence to ensure alignment and effective achievement of goals. Additionally, the meeting shared experiences and best practices from various countries to strengthen competitiveness and long-term economic growth, emphasizing international cooperation under efficient market systems and rules-based free trade, which remain vital mechanisms for driving industrial policy effectively. The meeting also highlighted the role of the OECD in supporting policy analysis through data and academic tools, which helps ensure transparency in policymaking and better balances strategic goals with risk management.

On the same occasion, the Thai delegation held discussions with the Business at OECD (BIAC) network to exchange views on the private sector’s role in supporting Thailand’s OECD accession process. This aimed to promote multi-stakeholder engagement and prepare the Thai private sector to adapt to the standards and dynamics of the changing global economy.

Participation in the 2026 OECD MCM reflects Thailand’s proactive role in continuously engaging with the OECD and its member countries. It also strengthens relationships and cooperation, which will be beneficial for preparing to adapt and upgrade various standards to align with the OECD, thereby supporting concrete progress in Thailand’s OECD accession process.
