Environment Sector
(Environment)

Background and Principles

The Environment sector promotes sustainable urban development and natural resource conservation. Managed by the Working Group on Environment (WGE), it focuses on sustainable and resilient green development. The primary objective is to develop environmentally friendly, sustainable cities with low-carbon economies, driven by the Green City Initiative. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment serves as Thailand’s main coordinating agency for this working group.

The Working Group on Environment aims to encourage more cities within the IMT-GT subregion to adopt and implement the Sustainable Urban Development Framework (SUDF), and to ensure that IMT-GT’s natural resources—such as adjacent national parks, protected areas, and transboundary wildlife—are effectively managed and conserved through regional cooperation.

These involve knowledge exchange with India as a partner country to establish concrete environmental policies for addressing oil spill issues within the IMT-GT subregion. Furthermore, initiatives have been launched to increase cooperation with the business sector. The Working Group also supports CIMT operations to strengthen cooperation with the ADB and UNESCAP, while seeking new development partners.
