5. Health

Background and Principles

The Health Working Group was established to support public health operations, with the GMS Health Cooperation Strategy 2019-2023 serving as a collaborative operational guideline. The year 2017 marked the first annual meeting of the GMS-WGHC, with working group meetings held annually thereafter. In 2020, a discussion was organized on regional health and challenges in the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the easing of the COVID-19 situation in many countries, an in-person working group meeting was held again in 2022.

Recent Progress

The GMS Health Cooperation Working Group has begun developing a new strategy, the GMS Health Cooperation Strategy 2024-2030. This strategy comprises two main pillars: regional health security and strengthening health systems towards universal health coverage. It takes into account important cross-cutting issues, particularly climate change, digital transformation, gender equality, and social inclusion.
