GMS Knowledge Network
GMS Knowledge Network (GMSKN)
Primary Agency: Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation
Background and Principles
The GMS 2030 Strategic Framework aims to develop the subregion to be more integrated, prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive. It emphasizes strengthening connectivity, competitiveness, sustainable development, disaster resilience, and both internal and external regional integration to build a GMS community with a shared future. Under this framework, the use of innovative approaches and knowledge in policy-making is promoted by supporting the establishment of the GMS Knowledge Network (GMSKN). This network comprises academic institutions, research organizations, and knowledge institutes from member countries to support expertise, policy dialogue, and awareness of key regional issues. In the initial phase, it focuses on supporting post-COVID-19 recovery, while in the long term, it will enhance regional cooperation and integration to achieve the goal of developing the Mekong Subregion into an integrated, prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive entity. For Thailand, the Mekong Institute (MI) serves as the coordinator to produce and disseminate knowledge that supports subregional development.
Recent Progress
Regional knowledge exchange is promoted through the Knowledge for Innovation Initiative, launched under the GMS Knowledge Network (GMSKN). This initiative aims to share information, research, best practices, and policy lessons among member countries to link knowledge with policy-making processes and project implementation based on data and empirical evidence. It also integrates emerging issues critical to subregional development. Furthermore, the network promotes multilateral cooperation between the public sector, private sector, academic institutions, and development partners, as well as other cooperation frameworks. It also develops the capacity and network of experts through training activities and the use of digital tools and knowledge databases to increase access, efficiency, and continuity of regional knowledge management.
